Gecko Guesthouse Langkawi with Backpackies

Gecko Guesthouse in Langkawi, is one of my favorite guesthouses in Langkawi. It is directly along Cenang Beach, where all the food, shops and beach is, and its got a great vibe to the place.

Gecko Guesthouse Langkawi

It is about 10 minutes taxi ride from the Airport or about 25 minutes from the Kuah Jetty (Harbour).
Taxi costs RM 18 (one way) to Cenang from the Airport and RM 25 from the Jetty.

If you’re taking the ferry to Langkawi, and planning to stay at Cenang Beach, you can rent a scooter from the jetty at RM30. This way you can save on taxi fare but it only works if you’re planning to take the ferry back, as you need to return the scooter at the jetty.

There are plenty of new guesthouses that are being set up on Cenang. You can also see there are a few mushrooming around Gecko’s premises. I think i still prefer gecko because of the laid back feel it has.

To get to Gecko, we normally look out for Artisans Pizza along Cenang. Just opposite Artisans (who by the way serves great hand tossed pizzas), is a small turn off. At the junction of the turn off you can see a sign that says RASA RESTAURANT. Just walk in and follow the signs.
These are the most recent pictures of Gecko Guesthouse Langkawi (March 2010):

You need to walk about 3 minutes from Cenang main road to reach Gecko

bar and reception at Gecko

Gecko has free wifi. There are plug points in the rooms and the cafe area as well. Very conducive to sit and work on your laptop. There might be mozzies (mosquitoes) at night. You just need to tell the worker to light some mosquito coil and you will be fine.

We stamped our mark!

The cafe serves breakfast and drinks as well

Lounge with cable TV

The dorms have air conditioning at night! (only if there are 6 people in the room). Still – RM 15 for a air conditioned room! Aaaaahhhhh in Langkawi’s heat, it is just bliss.

Its cool and doesn’t have mosquitoes bugging you.

my dorm. i just couldn't touch other peoples "shit" cuz i want to take a picture right?

(my bed is the bottom bunk. It would be contributing to the mess if it wasn’t for me not checking in yet when i took the picture!).
Add a little more money and you can have a private room.

Private huts with balcony, en suite toilets and air conditioning for RM 60

A sneak look into the huts

Double beds in the huts

Another double bed room, they are roomy and airy

Gecko is a great place to meet other travelers. Every single trip i stayed in Gecko, i would definitely make a lot of friends. Some i will also take them out sightseeing.

2 months back, i made a good friend named Marco from Italy and also another guy from China. This trip it was Danny from Holland. Besides giving him shit about Holland losing the world cup, he was a great person to hang out with. (have since added him on Facebook). So here are the contacts and room rates if you are planning to stay there! Have fun backpacking langkawi!
